day breaks in the cemetery.
just beneath the earth, my body stirs.
a torch left to burn out,
a shovel lying on the ground…

how did i end up here? there must have been a terrible mistake.
it’s far before my time – or maybe my time has come,
cause i can see my name scratched into the stone.

wipe the soil from my eyes, and the dirt from my back. whichever way it goes, i’m ready.
scrape the soil from my teeth, and the dirt from my neck. whichever way it goes, i’m ready.

my hands stuck under the ground.
my feet stuck under the ground.
not buried, but not unearthed – so push me in, or pull me out.

sun cuts through the dirt.
worms and beetles wake.
a premature monument:
a shallow grave, or no grave at all.
